     Je sais que je ne suis pas vieux... enfin, pas encore... et pas aux yeux de tous...

     Je sais aussi qu'il y a encore des tonnes et des tas de choses que j'ai envie de faire, de réaliser, d'accomplir... pour moi et pour certains autres... et pour autrui...

     C'est peut-être prétentieux, bien que je sois persuadé de la même chose pour tout un chacun, à mes yeux, l’existence doit représenter beaucoup plus que cette série d'obligations et de devoirs imposés par nos régimes sociaux, économiques et politiques.

     Si en plus on considère n'être TOUS sur terre que pour un bref moment, un bref passage dans l'infini du temps, quelles que soient nos croyances, nos convictions (ou absence de), se peut-il que tout cela se résume tout bonnement, tout bêtement, à produire, de surcroît de façon rentable, à être servile aux taxes et aux impôts, à donner sa vie pour des causes tantôt perdues, tantôt justifiables par une seule poignée d'humains ?

     Se peut-il que tout cela soit une simple pièce de théâtre où certains personnages seront indignes de plus de mention qu'une épitaphe ?

     Ceux qui peuvent avoir des enfants et ainsi assurer leur pérennité ou ceux, encore plus bénis, qui parviennent à adopter, procurant ainsi l'essentiel aux laissés pour compte de notre monde impitoyable, ceux-là laisseront une trace indélébile dans l'arbre généalogique de l'humanité.

     Mais les autres, dont je fais partie ?

     Ceux qui, comme moi, voient les souffrances, mais ne peuvent agir.

     Ceux qui, comme moi, constatent les injustices, mais ne peuvent intervenir.

     Ceux qui, comme moi, voient la perdition, le désespoir, la tristesse, mais n'ont aucun moyen de les enrayer ni d’en désamorcer les conséquences.

     Je ne parlerai même pas (parce que je l’ai déjà fait) de ceux qui peuvent tout en ne faisant rien. De ceux qui savent tout en se taisant. Ceux là, grand bien leur fassent même s’ils ne paieront peut-être jamais le prix de leurs insolences.

     Voilà.

     C’est pour ça que j’ai un blog. C’est pour ça que je viens ici épancher cette soif, ce besoin vital de m’exprimer, d’être entendu.

     Pour ne pas mourir.

     Pour m’éviter de ne pas exister.

     J’ai décidé, à peu près au même moment que j’ai commencé ce blog, de traduire en anglais tout ce que j’écris... et tout ce que j’ai écrit.

     J’ai entamé d’ailleurs moi-même la traduction d’un de mes écrits, un roman qui n’a jamais trouvé preneur... qui est bel et bien protégé en fait de droits d’auteur, mais qui n’a jamais vraiment vu le jour... un roman qui, en fait, porte le même nom que ce blog : Le pas de l’écrivain.

     Je vais me permettre de profiter un peu de vous, lecteurs, et vous le faire lire par bribes, par extraits judicieusement choisis afin de ne pas trop en dévoiler ni trop en cacher.

     En même temps, si le cœur vous en dit, il vous sera possible de passer des commentaires, notamment sur la qualité de ma traduction littéraire. Je me rends compte, pour avoir lu des romans écrits en anglais, qu’il n’est pas maigre tâche que de s’exprimer dans une langue qui ne vous est pas propre.

     Et qui sait, peut-être en cours de route, une illumination surviendra et changera le cours de l’existence.

     À bon entendeur...

     I know I am not old... well, not that old… and not to everyone’s view point…

     I also know that there still are tons and tons of things I want to do, carry on, even achieve… for me and a few people… for others…

     This may sound pretentious, even though I am convinced of the same reality for everybody, but life must represent far more then just this galaxy of duties and obligations thrown upon us by our social, economic and political systems.

     In addition, if we consider ALL being on earth for a brief moment, a brief stint in the infinity of time, whatever our beliefs, our convictions (or lack of), can it all be simply, stupidly summed up by our cost-effective productivity and to be rendered servile to direct and indirect taxes, to give our lives for obscure reasons, sometimes even barely justifiable by a mere handful of people?

     Is it possible that all this is but a play, a theatre production, where some characters will not be worthy of more mention then an epitaph?

     Those who may have children and thus ensure their own eternalness or those, even more blessed, who manage to adopt, therefore providing the essential to the most deprived of our unforgiving world, those will be allowed to leave an indelible mark on mankind’s family tree.

     But the rest, of which I know I’m a part of?

     Those who, like me, see the sufferings but can’t act?

     Those who, like me, witness the injustices but can’t intervene?

     Those who, like me, see the distress, the despair, the immense sadness but have no means to stop it, not even to defuse their consequences.

     I will not even mention (because I have done that already) those who can but don’t act, those who know but stay silent. To them, great good be done even though they will surely never pay for their insolences.

     There.

     This is why I have a blog. That is why I come here to vent this thirst, this vital need to speak out and be heard.

     To not die.

     To avoid not existing.

     I have decided, almost at the same time I started this bilingual blog, to translate in English all I write and all I have written as well.

     In fact, I started translating on my own one of my pieces of writing, a novel that never found any publisher in french… a novel that is in fact copyrighted but never publicly emerged… a novel that bares the very same name of this blog… “At writer’s pace”.

     I will allow myself to “take advantage” of you, bloggers, and have you read it through carefully chosen excerpts to avoid revealing or hide too much.

     At the same time, if you feel like it, you can leave comments notably on the quality of my literary translation. I am conscious, having read many novels written in English, that it is not an easy task to write in a language that is not your own.

     And who knows, maybe along the way, an illumination will occur and change the course of life itself.

     This being said…

Le sénateur anti-gay était homosexuel

     Un sénateur conservateur états-uniens qui a voté contre les droits des homosexuels durant ses 14 années en fonction vient d'avouer qu'il était gay.

     Le Républicain Roy Ashburn, en congé depuis son arrestation la semaine dernière pour conduite en état d'ébriété, a fait son coming out au cours d'une interview radio. Il voulait faire face aux rumeurs selon lesquelles il se serait rendu dans un club gay avant son arrestation à Sacramento, le 3 mars.

     Ashburn, représentant californien âgé de 55 ans, a expliqué que ses votes reflétaient la façon suivant laquelle ses électeurs voulaient qu'il vote en non pas son "propre conflit interne".

     "Je suis gay... voilà les mots qui ont été si difficiles pour moi depuis si longtemps", a déclaré le père de quatre enfants et divorcé sur les ondes de KERN.

     Roy Ashburn s'était notamment opposé l'an dernier à un projet proposant de choisir une date pour honorer annuellement la mémoire du militant pour les Droits des Gay Harvey Milk. Il avait également voté contre l'élargissement des lois anti-discrimination et contre la reconnaissance des mariages homosexuels ayant eu lieu en dehors de l'état.

     Merci à tous les dieux de toutes les religions, Ashburn a de plus déclaré ne pas briguer de mandat public au terme de celui en cours qui s'achèvera en 2010.

Anti Gay California Rep. Senator is gay !

     An American republican senator who has been voting against LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) rights throughout his 14 years in the Senate just admitted to being gay himself.

     On leave since he was arrested for drunk driving, Roy Ashburn made his coming out in a radio interview. He said he wanted to face the rumours that he just left a Sacramento gay bar when he was arrested on March 3rd.

     The elected conservative, aged 55, explained that his positions represented the way his voters wanted him to vote, not his “own personal conflicts”.

     “I am gay... these are words that have been so uneasy for me to say for so long” has declared the divorced father of four live on KERN radio.

     Last year, Roy Ashburn notably opposed a project wanting to set a date to yearly honour the memory of Gay Rights militant Harvey Milk. He also voted against an enlargement of the anti-discrimination law as well as against the recognition of same sex marriage performed out of California.

     Thanks to all the gods of all religions, Ashburn declared he will not seek another public term after this one ends at the end of 2010.

     Tout d'abord, je dois dire que, pour une fois depuis longtemps, nous avons eu droit à une cérémonie sympathique et sans trop de chichis...peut-être à cause de cette période de catastrophes partout sur la planète... peut-être grâce au brio du duo comique Alec Baldwin et Steve Martin.

     Avec un numéro d'ouverture style Broadway mettant en vedette l'étincelant Neil Patrick Harris.

     À noter aussi un hommage vraiment apprécié et mérité aux films d'horreur de tous les temps, puis un numéro plus qu'époustoufflant présentant toutes les musiques de films en lice par la (insérer ici tous les superlatifs que vous voudrez et pourrez trouver) troupe de danse "Legion of Extraordinary dancers" ; ensuite, un hommage encore plus émouvant de James Taylor à tous les disparus de 2009 (In Memoriam) et, enfin, et non le moindre, un troublant Au Revoir à John Hugues (1950 - 2009) à qui l'on doit bon nombre de grands succès populaires états-uniens (Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, Ferries Bueller's day off, Home Alone) et l'émergence d'une pléiade de jeunes acteurs qui font encore aujourd'hui le bonheur des cinéphiles et des producteurs (Judd Nelson, John Cusack, Anthony Michael Hall, Mathew Broderick, Molly Ringwald, Andrew MacCarthy, James Spader, Émilio Estevez, Macaulay Culkin pour en nommer quelques-uns).

     First off, I have to say that, for once in a long time, we have had the pleasure to witness a very simple and sobre presentation... maybe due to all the catastrophes happening all over the planet... or maybe was it the brilliant comic duo Alec Baldwin-Steve Martin.

     With a glamerous Broadway style opening number with a very flashy Neil Patrick Harris.

     And to be especially noted, a well deserved tribute to horror movies of all times, and a more then breathtaking number presenting the five songs nominated by the (insert all the superlatives you want and can find here) "Legion of extraordinary dancers" ;  also, a very deep profound good bye to all those we've lost during the year 2009 (In memoriam) by James Taylor alone with a guitar, singing a moving "There are Places" by The Beatles ;  then, and not the least, a moving farewell to John Hugues (1950-2009) to whom we must be thankful for many great popular box-office successes (Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, Ferries Bueller's Day Off, Home Alone) and the emerging of a pleiad of young actors that still are pleasing us on stage or screen (Judd Nelson, John Cusack, Anthony Michael Hall, Mathew Broderick, Molly Ringwald, Andrew MacCarthy, James Spader, Emilio Estevez,Macaulay Culkin, to name just a few).

Et Haïti dans tout ça ? - And what about Haiti now ?

     3000 personnes évacuées, 13 tuées et au moins 3 portées disparues c'est le bilan des pluies diluviennes qui se sont abattues sur Haïti ce samedi, provoquant des inondations et de nombreux dommages.

     Plusieurs secteurs de la ville des Cayes ont été inondés, forçant des dizaines de personnes à se réfugier sur le toit de leur maison. Le secteur agricole, les infrastructures routières ont été gravement touchés par les intempéries, les autorités ont fait état d'éboulements dans plusieurs localités.

     Gilou Saneglin Goin, un entrepreneur haïtien des Cayes a déclaré : "Nous au moins on a des maisons ici. A Port-au-Prince, ils n'en ont pas, ils sont dans la rue". M. Goin dit appréhender l'effet de ces pluies torrentielles quand elles toucheront la région de Port-au-Prince d'ici quelques semaines : "Tous les cadavres coincés dans les ruines, qu'est-ce qu'ils vont en faire? Toutes les odeurs, les maladies. L'eau dans laquelle ils baignent, celle que vous buvez, c'est la même eau!  Une catastrophe au-delà de toute proportion humaine !"

     3000 more people evacuated, 13 killed and at least 3 missing is the temporary toll of the torrential rains that hit hitting Haiti non stop this past Saturday Feb 27th, causing even more devastation and damages.

     Some areas of the city Les Cayes have been severely flooded forcing tens of people to take shelter on the few rooftops of the houses still standing.  The agricultural industry, the road system and infrastructure have been damaged by the bad weather and authorities have already reported several mud slides in a few other areas.

     Gilou Saneglin Goin, an Haitian contractor of Les Cayes declared "We, here, still have our houses at least.  In Port-au-Prince, they are homeless and live in the streets."  Mr Goin said he is very worried about the effects of the torrential rains when they will reach the area of the Nation's Capital a few weeks from now.  "All the bodies still trapped inside the many ruins, what are they going to do with them?  All the odors, the diseases.  The water they bathe in and that which they drink, it is the same !  A catastrophy beyond human proportions !"
